Understanding Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people 65 and older. Some younger people may also qualify because of disability or certain medical conditions.
When should I enroll?
Your Initial Enrollment Period starts three months before your 65th birthday month, includes your birthday month, and continues for three months after.
What are the parts of Medicare?
Part A helps with hospital coverage. Part B helps with doctor visits and outpatient care. Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is offered by private insurance companies. Part D helps with prescription drug coverage.
Original Medicare vs. Medicare Advantage
Original Medicare includes Parts A and B and is accepted by many providers nationwide. Medicare Advantage plans may include extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, and prescription coverage.
Does Medicare include prescriptions?
Original Medicare does not usually cover most prescriptions. Many people add a Part D plan or choose a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage included.
Can I keep working after 65?
You may be able to delay parts of Medicare if you have qualifying employer coverage. Review your situation carefully to avoid penalties.
Are there late enrollment penalties?
Penalties may apply when someone delays enrollment without other qualifying coverage.
How do I choose a plan?
The right plan depends on your doctors, prescriptions, preferred pharmacy, budget, travel needs, and desired extra benefits.
Can I change plans later?
There are specific enrollment periods each year when eligible Medicare beneficiaries may be able to change coverage.
Why work with a Medicare agent?
A licensed agent can explain options, compare plans, review benefits, and guide you through enrollment.
